Good morning ladies and gentlemen of the media and welcome to this first Press Conference for the Miss Guyana World 2003 Pageant. We are indeed happy for this opportunity to tell you about 3rd annual Miss Guyana World Pageant which will be held on Saturday September 6 at the National Cultural Center.

This Pageant is once again being organised by K. M. Chung Promotions, headed by Mr. Kenneth Chung, franchise-holder for the Miss Guyana World Pageant. Ken Chung is a London-based Guyanese who migrated from Guyana some forty years ago. Ken Chung became involved in Pageantry after being convinced by a friend of his – the franchise holder of the Puerto Rican Pageant. After approaching the Miss World Organisation in London, the franchise was granted and the first Miss Guyana World Pageant was held in 2001.

Although still in its early stages of development, the Miss Guyana World has managed to maintain a very high standard and level of professionalism and has produced queens of distinction in Olive Gopaul and our reigning queen Odessa Phillips.

Odessa proudly represented Guyana last December, first in Nigeria and then in London after that Pageant was moved at the last moment due to violence sparked by the sentence imposed on Amina Lawal. We are proud of Odessa who has worn her crown with dignity and grace and who has been a role-model to many. Odessa has traveled widely in Guyana to support various causes and now hosts her own television programme. We have no doubt that she will be successful in all of her endeavours and will continue to make Guyana proud.

The team working to bring about this year’s Pageant includes Derek Moore (the Artistic Director/ Trainer), former Miss Guyana World Olive Gopaul (Pageant Coordinator), Asmita Chand (Marketing/ Finance Coordinator), Basil Williams (Legal Adviser), Odessa Phillips & Neil Marks (PR) and Christopher Goodridge (Assistant Trainer).

This year we will continue to strive to improve the quality of our Pageant. We endured the arduous task of hand-picking and screening a number of young ladies and have short-listed fourteen beautiful contenders for the crown who will be presented to the media & special invitees at a cocktail to be held at the Le Meridien Pegasus on Thursday July 10.We wish to acknowledge the kind support of the Le Meridien Pegasus which has sponsored this event and the Ministry of Culture who has sponsored the garments to be worn by the delegates.

The contestants represent a rich mixture of races and hail from across the country. Training has already begun at the Hotel Tower and we wish to thank the management of the Hotel for so kindly allowing us use of the Hotel’s facilities for all of our training.

The Committee recognizes the importance in having our girls prepared both mentally and physically and as such have arranged for weekly workshops with various professionals to lecture to our delegates on various social and international issues and on skills development. In addition, the delegates will attend swimming, aerobics and yoga classes and will be attached to various Non-Governmental Organisations to aid in the development of their platforms. The delegates will also receive training in social skills, etiquette and modeling techniques.

This year’s Pageant will move closer to the style of the Miss World Pageant with  pre-judged intelligence and evening gown competitions to be held on August 29 and 30 respectively. In addition, the Guyana U-Decide Programme will be held on September 3 on GTV. Two fashion shows entitled “Feminine Moods” will be held in New Amsterdam and at Thirst Park on July 26 and August 3 respectively.

We are pleased to announce that this year’s pageant will be taking a humanitarian focus and we hope to attain status as a charitable organisation by 2005. The theme of the Miss World Pageant “Beauty with a Purpose” has also been adopted by our Pageant and it is our hope that we will be able to meaningfully contribute to society in a few years.

Our evening gown competition will take the form of a black-tie dinner at the Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel from which part proceeds will be donated to Ms. Samantha Walton, a victim of acid burns.

We also intend to launch our Pageant Magazine in August from which part of the proceeds will be contributed to the Blind Institute.

The Queen will be selected by independent panels of judges and will represent Guyana at the 53rd Miss World Competition in the city of Sanya in China's southernmost Hainan province, from Nov. 9 to Dec. 6.  Contenders from 117 countries are expected to participate in the Miss World Competition.

Prior to traveling to China, the Queen will visit and spend some time in London with a London-based Guyanese community where she will complete her preparations for the Pageant and where her wardrobe will be put together.

Finally we wish to thank you the members of the media and all the companies who have supported us through the years. We also welcome our new sponsors and thank them for making the decision to come on board with the Miss Guyana World Pageant. We promise to deliver a Pageant of unquestionable integrity and full of entertainment.
