Glamorous Granny Pageant 2006
The 4th. landmark pageant saw a myriad of contestants from predominantly
Caribbean Countries vying for the coveted title of Glamorous Granny
2006. The success of previous years certainly seemed to have made
an impact and the title of “Glamorous Granny 2006” an attractive one
as the pageant was not short of contestants.
A full complement totalling 18 contestants exerted their best efforts
to win the favour of the judges as guests were entertained by these
delightful ladies. The evening started with a bang as the ladies displayed
their dancing skills, moving with the rhythm that belong only to Caribbean
people as they showcased their national dress.
Their nimble movements in sync with the beat of lively Caribbean music
provided by GT promotions and DJ Sherwin & Daddy Shotgun would lead
you to believe that these were ladies were sprightly teenagers instead
of established grandmothers.
The second appearance saw the ladies in their evening wear and from
where I was sitting it was clear that the contestants had no intention
of looking like grannies. The gowns were well chosen to show off the
best features of these ladies and even those who were on the heavier
side, worn their gowns with style and creativity. Of course those
with the trim teenage bodies were distinctly impressive and made one
yearn to discover their secrets to youthfulness.
The highlight of the evening for me however was the sharing of the
opinions of the grandchildren of these ladies. The organizers did
well by inviting the grandchildren to share their impressions of their
grandmothers with the audience and what a treat!
Even the toddlers bravely took that microphone and poured out their
heartfelt thanks to these ladies. Those ladies who were not winners
of the contest must admit that they were indeed winners of the love,
respect and adoration of their grandchildren. The evening ended with
the judges making their selection and Jean Pitter, a Jamaican emerged
as 2nd. runner up and Janet Fabian, another Jamaican emerged as the
1st. runner up.
Guyana, not to be beaten by Jamaica, took the winning title with
Guyanese Mrs. Lyn Bennett emerging the winner of this year’s contest.
I am sure the audience would have shared the judges’ opinion as Mrs
Bennett presented a picture of elegance, glamour and complete confidence.
The organizers, Yeuton Crandon, Sharon Abdoulla , Lynette Albert and
Melissa Paul must take credit for creating a pageant that recognises
the wealth of experience and skills of this particular category of
ladies. I am sure that the reign of this year’s Glamorous Granny 2006
will contribute to the well-being and support of the younger generations
and will provide an outlet for the continuing creativity of all the
contestants.
The evening was one too of the greeting and sharing of Caribbean people
in a climate that was alive with Caribbean culture from the food,
to the music, to the sheer energy of a people who know how to manifest
their zest for living.
