It followed her selection by the
Miss Guyana World committee from a list of prospective candidates
who were seen as having the kind of qualities they were
looking for in a young woman to represent this country at
the upcoming Miss World Pageant billed for the Ukraine next
month.
The decision was taken a few weeks
ago when it was realised that it was too late in the day
to hold a pageant to formally select a delegate, and that
someone had to be found post haste to represent Guyana at
the prestigious pageant, which turns 58 this year.
According to members of the
Miss Guyana World committee, Simmons, whose year-long reign
as Miss Jamzone 2007 officially ends today, best fit the
bill as the sort of person they would like to send to the
pageant.
The svelte beauty, who holds a degree in the Social Sciences
from the University of Guyana, is the second local to have
been so selected to contest the Miss World Pageant without
first testing the waters at home.

The short coronation programme, which
got off to a late start, was hosted by Stan Goveia. It began
with a rendition of the National Anthem by Atlanta-based
singer Monique Weeks, which was then followed by the announcing
of the new queen.
In her final speech, the outgoing
queen spoke glowingly of her successor: "I couldn't have
handed over my crown to a more deserving contestant," she
said, adding that her reign as Miss Guyana World had opened
up many opportunities for her. Her advice to Simmons was
that she should always be open to criticism and counsel.
She also wished her the best of luck and urged that she
"keep smiling."
As part of the evening's programme
of events, a member of the Classique dance troupe rendered
an interpretive dance to Michael Boltons 'Back on my feet
Again', but the real highpoint was when a beaming Simmons,
resplendent in a crimped silk dress in muted yellow and
featuring a laced-up front, ruffled and uplifted hemline
and lime green feathers at the hips and bust, stepped forward
to accept the crown.
