VIVID memories of her first kiss as a teenager which she practised on everything from her teddy bear to her mirror, secured Dessia Braithwaite’s title of Miss Guyana World 2006 and the chance to represent Guyana at the Miss World pageant in Poland this September.

Once she had made it as one of the five finalists, Dessia's first kiss memories flashed in front of her when she was asked what her most memorable moment as a teenager was. She answered smoothly with a bubbly charm that won the hearts of the judges at the gala event at Le Meridien Pegasus Saturday evening.

'It was thrilling. I'm excited. It is going to be a ride filled with fun' she said after being crowned by last year's queen Jasmine Herzog.

Dessia, 24, a social work student from Georgetown, incidentally played the role of a young girl growing up dreaming to become Miss Guyana World in a musical play two years ago.

A professional model who has been dancing since she was 14, radiated a calm elegance and charm as she went through the introduction, swimwear, evening gown and intelligence segments.
Those who came close behind her
as finalists received titles to represent Guyana at various international pageants. This was the first time in Guyana's pageant history that five international titles were awarded on a single night.

Kristia Ramlagan, first runner-up, will represent Guyana at Miss International, while the second-runner-up, Tenesia Harding will go to Miss Tourism Queen. Third runner-up Yulanda Armstrong received a title to represent Guyana at Miss Globe and the fourth runner-up will go to Miss Inter-Continental.

The crowning of the five beauty queens marked the sixth year of the Miss Guyana World organisation under London-based businessma Ken Chung, who has had artistic director Derek Moore from the inception.

Moore was responsible for a well-choreographed show with the only hiccup of the night being standing room for some patrons.

The evening saw scintillating dance performances by the Indian dance group Sitare, the National School of Dance and the group who performed in “Rainbow Raani” the movie filmed in Guyana.

Vocals included those by Bonny Alves, ‘G Money” and “24K.” An appearance by Mrs. World finalist Carolan Ann Lynch added to the glamour of the evening.

President Bharrat Jagdeo and Public Service Minister Dr. Jennifer Westford were there.

After dinner, the audience was ready for an evening of competition and entertainment and was not disappointed. The evening began with eight contestants dancing to a sexy pop rhythm and then individually they seduced the audience with tantalizing catch-lines in their brief introductions.
