The chosen Miss Guyana World 2004, Suzette Shim

SUZETTE Shim will be crowned Miss Guyana World 2004 and represent Guyana at the prestigious Miss World Pageant in China on December 4. The local pageant committee announced yesterday that Shim who secured the second-runner spot at last year’s Miss Guyana World pageant, was chosen over some twenty other ladies who applied for a spot in the ‘winners row’ of the local pageant and will officially begin her reign sometime in August when she will be crowned by reigning queen Alexis Glasgow.

At a press conference yesterday, K. M. Chung Promotions informed the media that after Shim, a University of Guyana Business Management student, applied and excelled at the selection interview, the committee reviewed her.

At a press conference yesterday, K. M. Chung Promotions informed the media that after Shim, a University of Guyana Business Management student, applied and excelled at the selection interview, the committee reviewed her performance at the 2003 pageant and found that she was the most suitable of those they screened to represent the country.

“She was a very disciplined and strong contender and a review of her performance showed that she performed consistently well in all areas of that pageant, placing second to Alexis in the Evening Gown competition , and winning the on-stage interview.”

It also stated that she is already in training for the pageant and the committee is confident that she has the ability to represent the country well.

“We are convinced that Suzette will represent our country well and we have already begun the process of grooming and preparing her for the Miss World contest.”

Shim will be groomed for the international pageant by committee members. She is scheduled to travel to New York later this year, where she will be further groomed and go on a shopping spree. She will also participate in a fundraising fashion show featuring designs by the pageant’s national Artistic Director, Derek Moore, and travel to London, England in October where a reception will be held in her honor by Laleshwar K.N. Singh, Guyana’s High Commissioner to that country. She will also be guest of honor at a dinner and dance sponsored by the Travel Shop in London, before leaving on November 11 to contest the Miss World pageant.

The committee said reigning Miss Guyana World Alexis Glasgow who represented the country at last year’s Miss World “has fulfilled her role with distinction.”

“Alexis performed extremely well in China and was among a small group of contestants chosen to have dinner with the Miss World Chairman, Julia Morley. Alexis did not place, but we are extremely proud of her performance,” the committee said.

The Urban-Therapy spokeswoman frequently travel throughout the Caribbean to represent the company and has been a role model especially to residents of her hometown New Amsterdam, Berbice.

Shim who stands at 5 feet 9 inches told Chronicle although she knew she had a good chance of being selected she was surprised when she got a telephone call from an executive member of the pageant committee informing her that she was the chosen one.

I was surprised, shocked, excited and I was very happy. I was speechless for a while (and) the first thing I did was call Shauna (her closest friend).” She said her friend too was very excited and when she informed her family they celebrated also.

Shim stated she is prepared to take on the new queen role and is ready to be further groomed to represent her country at Miss World.

She feels that physically she already is a true representation of Guyana since she is mixed with Chinese, East Indian, African, and European, and is a patriotic citizen.

K.M. Chung secured the Miss World franchise four years ago and has since sent three beauty ambassadors to represent Guyana at Miss World. In 2001 the country was represented by Olive Gopaul, and reigning Miss Guyana Universe Odessa Phillips participated the following year. Phillips crowned Glasgow last year.

PRESS STATEMENT Tuesday June 15, 2004

Good morning ladies and gentlemen of the media. We are pleased to welcome you to this Press Conference to announce the plans of the Miss Guyana World Organisation for the year.

As you are all aware, this is the fourth year that we will be sending a representative to the Miss World Contest under the current franchise held by K. M. Chung Promotions which is headed by Mr. Kenneth Chung, a UK-based Guyanese.

Earlier this year, we issued a Statement indicating that we would not be hosting a Pageant this year due to the fact that the Miss World Contest would have been brought forward to October instead of December. Although the Miss World Organisation has since reverted to holding the Miss World Contest on the original date in December, we have decided to hand-pick our representative which will allow us more time to prepare her, introduce our first ever musical production and bring forward next year's contest to April/May.

The Miss Guyana World Organisation strives to maintain a very high standard and level of professionalism, each year introducing new concepts and ideas to our Pageant. We believe that we have improved tremendously since our first Pageant in 2001, and our growing experience is lending itself to preparing stronger contenders at the international level.

This year's main activities include a musical play and a dinner/show. The Play "Crown, Pearls and Dancing Girls" written and directed by Derek Moore and Christopher Goodridge tells the story of a little girl dreaming of becoming Miss Guyana World. The Let's Dance Studio, Classique Dance Company and Matrix Video Productions are also involved in bringing the production to stage. The play will run for three consecutive nights beginning July 22.

Once again, we will be producing a high-quality Pageant Magazine which will feature articles on our queens and which will be on sale at Pageant events.

Our reigning queen Alexis Glasgow has fulfilled her role with distinction. Alexis performed extremely well in China and was among a small group of contestants chosen to have dinner with the Miss World Chairman, Julia Morley. Alexis did not place, but we are extremely proud of her performance. She has been a role model to many, particularly in her hometown of New Amsterdam. She is the spokesperson for Urban Therapy, a job which requires her to travel/ work within the Caribbean on a frequent basis. We have no doubt that Alexis will be successful in all of her endeavours and will continue to make Guyana proud.

The young lady we have chosen to continue from Alexis's reign is well known to us. She is Ms. Suzette Shim who participated in our 2003 pageant was placed 2nd runner up. She was a very disciplined and strong contender and a review of her performance showed that she performed consistently well in all areas of that Pageant, placing second to Alexis in the Evening Gown Competition, and winning the on-stage interview. We are convinced that Suzette will represent our country well and we have already begun the process of grooming and preparing her for the Miss World Contest. She will also be working closely with Alexis who will share her experiences in China. We will be releasing bio-data and photographs of Ms. Shim to the media shortly.

Prior to departing for London, Suzette will spend time in New York shopping and preparing for the Miss World Contest. She will also participate in a fundraising fashion show featuring the work of our Artistic Director, Derek Moore.

The Queen and Chaperone will leave Guyana for London on Sat.30/Oct/04. There will be two official activities in London before the Queen departs for China: A reception will be hosted by the Honourable Laleshwar K.N. Singh, High Commission of Guyana at the Guyana High Commission and a Dinner and Dance sponsored by The Travel Shop. Suzette will leave London for China on November 11 to participate in the Miss World Contest on December 4. We wish to thank the media and all the companies who have supported the Miss Guyana World Pageant throughout the years and hope to continue to receive support of the business community.

Thank you to BWIA for always rising to the challenge, Courts (Guyana) Inc., GT&T, Inglefield, Oglivly and Mather, Gizmos and Gadgets for coming forward again this year. Special thanks also to Tip Top Hair & Nails Salon and the Studio 2000 Gym who are kindly providing their services to assist in the preparation of our new queen.

Ladies and gentlemen, thank you once again and we do look forward to your continued support as we venture on. Please feel free to call us at telephone numbers 226-1808 or 614-2073.
